Bernie and Cat Grass

A photo of the cat grass that I just grew. It's so pretty and I think Bernie Madoff likes it too. I did this quick scribbly pencil sketch of him recently for a project that I have in mind.

Some Guys

I did these wacky portraits in my inking class. Veronica brought in hilarious photos of random people and had us use giant brushes and large paper (18" x 24") to create these. The objective was to work fast and have fun - so they're far from perfect. I was just trying to stay loose.

I'm sad that it was our last class! Veronica is an amazing teacher and I hope she will be teaching more adult classes at WAM. She encouraged us all to work outside our comfort zone while keeping it fun. Ink is a pretty unforgiving medium, so if you get really uptight about it you will drive yourself crazy. Granted, I'm not going to throw out the advice I once read, "Think before you ink," because that's important too especially with a comic page. But it's good to find a balance.

Ink Wash Portrait

Quick piece from my ink drawing class. I just wanted to keep it loose and free, try something new, and have some fun!

Face Asymmetry

Faces are one of my favorite subjects to draw. I've always enjoyed looking at pictures of faces. I'm fascinated by the distinct lines and shapes that make a particular face unique. When I draw a portrait, I'm always curious to see what minimum amount of information will make a face recognizable.

I'm also fascinated by (and very grateful for!) facial asymmetry. I created some of my own examples of this phenomenon with photos of a man and woman. The photo to the far left is the actual person. In the middle and far right images, one side of the face is copied and pasted on the other side to make a completely symmetrical face.

It's funny how both of the middle faces in these examples look slightly Appalachian and the faces to their right look like the Appalachian's more well-rounded, socially adjusted cousin.

The Candy

Eye candy, that is.

Just some Thursday night sketches
of some Thursday night dreamboats.

Ugly people are just more
interesting to draw.

That's all I can tell you.

Does that make them beautiful?

Maybe.

The portrait...

Sometimes I draw other things besides comics. This is a portrait I did of of Ellen Page (no relation to Jimmy or Neal). She is the actress from that film, Juno, about a young girl who borrows her parents' blue minivan for hours on end and they're too busy puttering around the house like brain-dead simpletons to notice or care. Kind of a far-fetched plot if you ask me.

Pencil and ink on print stock.
