DC's Love Stories

I picked up a copy of DC's Love Stories (100-page Super Spectacular). It's a 2000 reprint of the original 1971 edition. I love the super cheesy, crazy melodramatic stories and the artwork is fantastic, featuring Ric Estrada, Wally Wood, Jay Scott Pike, Bob Oksner, Mort Drucker, Tony Abruzzo, Art Saaf, and Vince Colletta, to name a bunch!

Also, it's a REALLY handy 'ready-reference' if you are trying to figure out how to draw people kissing.

I was trying to create a rabbit character for a larger piece I'm working on. I wanted him to be both creepy and funny. This is one of the sketches I did, but I ended up going with another design.

Labor Unions - A Vintage Catholic Comic Explains

I love finding old, weird comics like "Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact," a comic put out by the Catholic church in the 1940's-50's. 'Treasure Chest' was supposed to satisfy kids' appetite for comics while delivering stories that the church deemed appropriate. This issue features a piece about labor unions. The cover art is by Lloyd Ostendorp. I also included a page excerpt. It's pretty interesting - and fitting for Labor Day!  

 

Artist Showcase - Dan DeCarlo

I needed some inspiration for my "Sexy Vegetables" project so I purchased this book about Dan DeCarlo's art, and it is awesome. It's a hard cover, coffee-table size, with a variety of DeCarlo's work, from obscure Archie-esque type comics to his original illustrations of va-va-va voom ladies, which he did in the most beautiful ink washes. I love that the book includes many of his rough sketches with handwritten notes in the margins. It's definitely an inspiration!
